Choosing Fonts for Long Reads
On this page
  1. Body text first
  2. Serif for headings, sans for body
  3. Changing them

A blog is read in paragraphs, not glances, so the typeface decision is about fatigue after two thousand words rather than impact in the first second. Inkwell's defaults were chosen on that basis, and the reasoning applies if you change them.

Body text first

Seventeen pixels or larger on the reading layouts, a measure of sixty to seventy-five characters, line height of at least 1.6. Those three numbers do more for readability than any font choice. The Magazine and Neutral layouts enforce them; the others stay close.

Serif for headings, sans for body

The default pairing is a serif brand face for titles and a humanist sans for body text, which keeps headings distinct without a size jump that breaks the rhythm. Every font ships inside the site in WOFF2 with font-display: swap and a preload for the body face, so text is never invisible while a font loads and no request leaves your domain.

Changing them

Add the files to the fonts folder, declare them in the fonts stylesheet, and pick them under Theme. Avoid a font that lacks a true italic; the editor uses italics for emphasis and a synthesised slant looks wrong at body size. For the surrounding decisions, read layouts and presets.
